Here are a couple of announcements for this week:

Picture day is this Thursday, August 25th. Please make sure your child is in uniform for these pictures because these are the pictures that will be used for the yearbook. Envelopes to purchase the pictures went home last week. Please make sure they are turned in no later than Thursday morning if you would like to buy pictures.

Entertainment books went home yesterday. If you do not want to buy or sell the entertainment book, please return it to school. If youwould like to sell it please look at the letter enclosed with the entertainment book for more information.

Open House is next Wednesday, August 31st from 6-8pm. It is a great chance to come in and see our classroom, as well as attend the firrst SPIN meeting of the year in the cafeteria. I hope to see you all there!

Welcome to 1st grade!

Welcome to a new school year! First grade is such a fun and exciting time and I cannot wait to meet all of my new 1st graders! I just wanted to let you know a few things that will be happening in the next couple days.

Tomorrow your child will be bringing home a homework folder. Please read the information in the folder and return all of the forms that need to be filled out as soon as possible. Please also send the homework folder back to school with your child everyday.

The first two days will be learning our rules and procedures and getting to know all of our new classmates. I will try and ease the kids into first grade and then we will start with our regular work and schedule on Monday.

There will be a lot of class information coming home tomorrow but if you have any questions about anything please let me know! We have just over a month until school is out. I can't believe how fast this year has flown by! I have a couple announcements and reminders for you this week.

There will be no school on Thursday, Friday or Monday, April 21st, 22nd, and 25th. I hope you have a nice few days off with your kids.

Spirit week is coming up! Here are the dress days:

The packet is longer than usual since it is going to cover more time. If you have any problems with getting it done please let me know!

Our Thanksgiving feast is coming up next Tuesday. This feast is for all students. We are asking everyone to contribute something to the feast and first grade is contributing the corn. We are asking that everyone bring a can or two of corn to school by Monday, November 22^nd.

If your child is bringing a jacket to school please make sure it has your child's name somewhere on it. If they would like to wear it inside the classroom it must be solid red, navy blue or white.

Picture retakes are on Tuesday, October 26th . I sent home an order form for those of you who wanted to buy pictures last time and did not get a chance. If you purchased pictures last time but wanted them retaken please send the original picture packet to school with your child.

Thursday is the 40th day of school!! It is so important that every one is here on that day. We will be doing a lot of fun activities and we will be having a pajama day. Your child can wear their pajamas but please make sure they are wearing regular shoes because we have P.E. that day.

Wednesday is dollar dress down day. If your child brings a dollar to school they do not have to wear their uniform. Please make sure their outfit is school appropriate(ex. no flip flips, spaghetti straps, etc.).

If you have egg cartons at home that you don't need please send them to school. These can be used for so many activities in the classroom. The art teacher is also asking that you send newspapers to school.

If your child is having a birthday and would like to bring a treat to share with the class please let me know ahead of time. All food items must be store bought. We have 28 children in our class. Thank you so much for your help with this!

Next Wednesday, October 13th, is the end of the quarter. This is a half day with no after school. Please make arrangements to have your child picked up at 11:30.

Movie night will be taking place in the cafeteria on Friday night. The movie shown will be Toy Story 3.

Cookie dough order forms were sent home today. Please look through the packet that was put in your child's backpack.

School pictures were also sent home. All students who paid for pictures should have recieved them by today.

Please make sure your child is doing the writing portion of their homework. The assignment for writing is listed on the cover page of the homework packet. This is a required part of homework. The students are used to writing at least 2 sentences a day in class so they should be able to complete this without too much trouble at home. Right now we are focusing on the children sounding out the words in a way that makes sense. They do not have to be spelled correctly unless we have already had it as a spelling word. Students may sometimes still need a little bit of help sounding out the words but they can do it!

The first two weeks of first grade have gone great! Here are a few announcements about important things coming up:

Monday is picture day. Please make sure your child is in uniform because these pictures will be used for the year book. There is a picture order form in your child's homework folder if you are interested in buying pictures.

Wednesday is our first dollar duds day. Your child can pay a dollar and wear any school appropriate clothes on that day. This money is used for our classroom and is used for art and science experiment supplies and other supplies needed during the year.

Wednesday is also open house! I would love to see you all there! Open house will go from 6:00-8:00. There will be presentations in the cafeteria and the classrooms will all be open. The book fair will also be open during open house. This is a great chance to come check out our classroom and find out a little about what we will be learning this year!

Please make sure your child is bringing their homework folder and behavior chart to school every single day! This is very important! Please also make sure you are checking your child's behavior chart everyday.

I am so excited to meet you all! School starts on Thursday at 8:30 and our classroom is Room 307.

I know this is last minute but I just wanted to let you know that tomorrow is Dr. Seuss' birthday so your child can wear a Dr. Seuss shirt with jeans, dress up like a character from a Dr. Seuss book, and/or wear crazy socks. If they do not do any of those they need to be in uniform. Sorry for the late notice!

I hope you all had a relaxing and fun break with your kids! Third quarter is almost over and we have a lot of things coming up before then. Here is the schedule for the next two weeks:

This week is Love of Reading week. We will have special activities every day to celebrate our love of reading. Two of these will be special dress days. On Tuesday your child can wear their pajamas and/or bring in their favorite book to share with the class. We will have a read-in and share our favorite books with each other. Friday will be dress like your favorite character day. The character must be in a book and your child needs to be able to name the character and book it is from. These are not free dress days. If your child chooses not to participate in these dress days they need to wear the usual uniform for that day.

There will be no school next Thursday and Friday, February 25th and 26th, because of Rodeo Days.

Here are a couple quick announcements:

This Wednesday, January 27th, is the 100th day of school. Your child may wear pajamas but no slippers, pillows or stuffed animals please. If you would prefer they not wear pajamas they can have a regular dress down day. They do not need to pay a dollar for this. The school will also provide a free lunch for the children on this day.

Permission slips for the field trip have been sent home and need to come back to school as soon as possible!

There are no toys allowed at school. Please make sure your child is not bringing any toys to school.

Our holiday program is this week. For the holiday program your child can wear jeans and a holiday shirt if they have one. If not please have them wear their red uniform shirt if possible. It will be taking place on Tuesday at 2pm in the cafeteria. I hope to see you there! We expect it to last between 30 and 45 minutes with cookies and juice afterwards. Please feel free to take your child with you afterwards but please let me know they are leaving.

Report cards go home on Wednesday. This is a half day with no after school or lunch. Please arrange to have your child picked up promptly at 11:30. If your child will not be here on Wednesday and you would like your child's report card ahead of time please let me know by Tuesday morning. I will not be able to get report cards right after the holiday program because I will need to be in the cafeteria with the other students.

Spellingcity.com is a great website to use to practice spelling words. Go to spellingcity.com and at the tookbar on the top click on find a list. Type Jenna Cochran into the teacher box and our lists will come up. There are a lot of fun activities and games you can use to practice the words.

Here are a couple of announcements about upcoming events.

Field trip money was due on Friday. Please send it in asap if I have not already received it from your child. If your child will not be going on the field trip please let me know that as well so we can plan accordingly.

Our 1st grade holiday program is on Tuesday, December 15th at 2:00pm in the cafeteria. The kids have been working hard on their songs and we would love to see you there!

Report card day is December 16. This is an early release day with no after school or lunch. Please make arrangements to have your child picked up right at 11:30. If your child will not be at school on this day please let me know so I can give them their report card ahead of time.

There are a couple of quick things I wanted to remind everyone about.

We will be going on our first field trip on February 11th. We will be attending a Nate the Great play. Although the play is still a couple months away, the money for the tickets is due in December. Please send $8 to school with your child by December 4th. Permission slips will be going home closer to the date of the play.

Our Thanksgiving Feast will be on November 24th. All of the classes will contribute something to the feast and first grade is in charge of corn. Please send a can or two of corn to school with your child by Monday, November 23rd. Thank you so much for your help!

There will be no school on November 25th, 26th or 27th. I hope you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving break with your children.

We are getting into the season where a lot of children are getting sick. Please do not send your child to school if they have a fever or if they have been throwing up.

I have had a few people ask me about Halloween costumes. The children are not allowed to wear their costumes to school on Friday, October 30th. They can wear them to Harvest Fest on that evening if they would like.

Here are some of the important dates and events we have coming up:

October:
21-The Sally Foster and cookie dough sales end. If you sold something please return the envelope and money to school. If you didn't sell anything the envelope does not need to be returned.

22-Picture retakes-If your child was not in school that day they will be getting their picture taken on this day.

22-Chick-fil-a fundraiser from 4-8pm at the El Con Mall Chick-fil-a -There is a form you can give them so our school will get a percentage of the cost of your order. If you need one, or need extras to give a friend or a neighbor please let me know!

30-Harvest Fest at the Lakeside campus from 6-9pm- We are asking for candy donations for the Harvest Fest. If you can donate anything please drop it off in our classroom or send it to school with your child.

November:

Spelling Tips!

School continues to go well! We are working hard in all of our subjects and I am very proud of all of the kids.

One thing we do in first grade is spelling tests. Spelling tests are new for many children and some struggle with them at first. Here are some things you can do to help your child be successful on spelling tests and with spelling in general.

Make flash cards that have the spelling words on them. Have your child read the words to you. Mix the words up so that they are not memorizing the order.
Give your child mock spelling tests. Have them practice writing the words down on paper as you read the word to the student. Again mix up the words so they don't just memorize them.
While driving in the car to and from school, or running errands, name off the words and have your child spell them for you.
When reading a book or when you see a word written somewhere ask them to point it out or show it to them and ask them to read to you. We want the student to be able to recognize the word in actual writing, not just for spelling tests.
Write the word on the paper with a few misspellings of the word. See if your child can identify which word is spelled correctly.
Ask your child to use the word in a sentence. If they cannot use it correctly help them come up with one.
Review words from past weeks. We want to be sure the students don't forget the words just because the test is over!

The most important thing about spelling tests is for the children to remember the words and be able to read and write them even after the spelling test is over. Having them go over the word in a variety of ways will help with this!

Dear Families-

The first couple weeks of school have gone great! We are working on appropriate behavior in the classroom and reviewing kindergarten concepts.

Here are some of the things we are working on:

Reading-We are working on identifying what happened in the beginning, middle and end of a story and knowing what the title, author and illustrator of a story are. We are also working on reading and sounding out words.

Phonics- We are currently reviewing the different letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make.

Writing- In writing we are practicing stretching out words in order to hear all the sounds which helps us spell them. We are also working on adding drawings to our writing to help tell the story.

Math- We are working on writing our numbers and bar graphs. We are also going over putting numbers in order.

I will update this site frequently with what we are working on, spelling lists, special assignments and important dates to remember.
