March 4th, 2013

This week we will be doing Galileo testing all week. This is a test the kids are given a few times a year to see how they are progressing. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and is at school on time every day this week. Thank you for your help with this!

Dollar dress down day is this Wednesday. If your child brings a dollar they can dress down!

Spring pictures will be taken on March 12th. These do need to be prepaid. The envelope was sent home last week. If you pay for your child to get their picture taken they can wear whatever you choose for the pictures. If you have not paid for pictures, your child will not have their picture taken and will need to wear their uniform.

Don’t forget about the Run, Walk, Roll event coming up on March 16th! If you have not already signed up we’d love to have you participate. Registration is happening online at LPARun.org. It is $12 for an individual, $20 for a pair and $40 for a family if you register before the race. The prices increase slightly on the day of the race. You can also get pledges in the amount of the entry fee rather than paying the entry fee. Please let me know if you have any questions about this! It should be a lot of fun and I hope to see a lot of you there.

We have homework again this week. Please make sure your child is completing their homework and turning in their packet on Friday. The kids should be completing the homework in their own handwriting. Everything in the homework packets is concepts we have covered in class. If your child is struggling on their homework, they are probably struggling in class as well. If you are ever worried about your child’s progress please let me know and we can talk or set up a conference.

Friday, March 15th will be the last day of the quarter. This means report cards will come home and it will be a ½ day with no after school. Please make sure your child is picked up promptly at 11:30! Our spring break will be from March 25th-April 2nd.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know! The easiest way to reach me is at jcochran@lpatucson.org. You can also send a note in your child’s folders, I check these daily. I will do my best to respond within 24 hours.

We have another busy week coming up! This week we will be celebrating Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day and Arizona’s Birthday.  It is my favorite week in first grade!

Today we learned all about Chinese New Year, ask your children about some of the things we learned today!

We will have a Valentine’s Day celebration on Thursday. If your child would like to bring in cards please make sure they bring in one for everyone in the class. I have had some students ask if they could bring in a snack or treat to share for Valentine’s Day. They are more than welcome to do so, just please make sure they bring in enough for every student. We have 30 students in our class.

I sent home book orders last week. If you would like to order, please send in the order form and money by Tuesday, February 19th. All checks should be made out to Scholastic Book Clubs. You can also order online. Go to scholastic.com and under the parent tab click on “order from book club flyer.” Our class code is HF6DD.

A couple website reminders! You can visit my blog at misscochranlpa.blogspot.com. You will find the spelling words as well as class announcements there. You can also use spellingcity.com for your child to practice their spelling words. If you go to spellingcity.com you can click on the find a list tab near the top of the page. If you type in Jenna Cochran it should take you to a link to our spelling lists.

Please make sure you are reading with your children at home! It makes a HUGE difference in your child’s reading progress if they are being read to and practicing their reading at home. I know it can be frustrating at times, but it really is so important and will help your child so much. We read daily at school but a little extra one on one attention will make all the difference in the world.

As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns please let me know. The easiest way to reach me is by e-mail. My e-mail address is jcochran@lpatucson.org. I will typically respond within 24 hours. You can also send a note in your child’s folder since I check them daily.

Thank you for your support!

Dear Families-
This week is Love of Reading week! We will have fun reading related activities all week long. This morning we had a policeman come read to our class. On Friday, your child can dress up like their favorite character from a book. Your child needs to be able to tell me what book their character is from.

Wednesday is dollar dress down day. If your child pays a dollar they can dress down.

Please make sure that if your child is wearing something under their uniform that it is school colors(red, white or navy blue).

December 17, 2012

Dear Families-

Christmas break is almost here! We have had a great quarter and I look forward to the rest of the year with these kids. They have all been making so much progress and I am excited to watch them grow the rest of the year.

Our final day of school before our break is this Wednesday, December 19th. We get out at 11:30 and there is no after school so please make sure your child is picked up by 11:30. Thank you for your help with this!
Report cards will go home on Tuesday in your child’s folder. Please sign the attached paper and return it to school. You can keep the report card.

This Tuesday we will have our Polar Express day. We will be doing a lot of activities relating to the book Polar Express and have a Polar Express celebration. Because of this, your child may wear their pajamas to school on Tuesday. We do have P.E. though so please make sure they wear appropriate school shoes.

There is no homework over the break but please make sure you have your child read. It will make sure they don’t fall behind over the break. Please also have them practice tying their shoes! This is a very important first grade skill, but many of the children do not know how to do it yet.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please e-mail me at jcochran@lpatucson.org

I hope you all have a fantastic holiday with your children! I will see you all back at school on Thursday, January 3rd.

Thank you for your support,
Jenna Cochran

December 10, 2012

There is only a week and a half left until Christmas break! We will be busy and have a lot of things going on!

Tuesday is our Christmas program. It will take place at 2:00pm in the cafeteria. It will last about 20 minutes. Afterwards you can take your child with you if you would like, but please let me know and sign them out in the office. For the Christmas program your child can wear jeans, and either a red uniform shirt or a holiday shirt.

Next Wednesday, December 19th, is our final day before the break. School will be dismissed at 11:30 and there will be no after school program. Please make arrangements to have your child picked up promptly at 11:30 on this day. This is also report card day, but I will be sending home report cards on Tuesday, December 18th so please check your child's folder for their report card.

This class has been doing a fantastic job with dress code! Just a quick reminder, jackets and sweatshirts that are worn inside the classroom must be red, white or navy blue and any clothes worn under the uniform that are visible also must be red, white or navy blue.

There is no homework this week or next week. Please continue to read with your children, and please make sure you are reading with them over the break. They are doing so well, but if they go two weeks without reading it can really set them back quite a bit. Thanks for your help with this!

I hope you all have a fantastic break with your children! As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know! The best way to reach me is via e-mail. My e-mail address is jcochran@lpatucson.org. I will do my best to get back to you within 24 hours.
