December 17, 2012

December 17, 2012

Dear Families-

Christmas break is almost here! We have had a great quarter and I look forward to the rest of the year with these kids. They have all been making so much progress and I am excited to watch them grow the rest of the year.

Our final day of school before our break is this Wednesday, December 19th. We get out at 11:30 and there is no after school so please make sure your child is picked up by 11:30. Thank you for your help with this!
Report cards will go home on Tuesday in your child’s folder. Please sign the attached paper and return it to school. You can keep the report card.

This Tuesday we will have our Polar Express day. We will be doing a lot of activities relating to the book Polar Express and have a Polar Express celebration. Because of this, your child may wear their pajamas to school on Tuesday. We do have P.E. though so please make sure they wear appropriate school shoes.

There is no homework over the break but please make sure you have your child read. It will make sure they don’t fall behind over the break. Please also have them practice tying their shoes! This is a very important first grade skill, but many of the children do not know how to do it yet.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please e-mail me at jcochran@lpatucson.org

I hope you all have a fantastic holiday with your children! I will see you all back at school on Thursday, January 3rd.

Thank you for your support,
Jenna Cochran

December 10, 2012

There is only a week and a half left until Christmas break! We will be busy and have a lot of things going on!

Tuesday is our Christmas program. It will take place at 2:00pm in the cafeteria. It will last about 20 minutes. Afterwards you can take your child with you if you would like, but please let me know and sign them out in the office. For the Christmas program your child can wear jeans, and either a red uniform shirt or a holiday shirt.

Next Wednesday, December 19th, is our final day before the break. School will be dismissed at 11:30 and there will be no after school program. Please make arrangements to have your child picked up promptly at 11:30 on this day. This is also report card day, but I will be sending home report cards on Tuesday, December 18th so please check your child's folder for their report card.

This class has been doing a fantastic job with dress code! Just a quick reminder, jackets and sweatshirts that are worn inside the classroom must be red, white or navy blue and any clothes worn under the uniform that are visible also must be red, white or navy blue.

There is no homework this week or next week. Please continue to read with your children, and please make sure you are reading with them over the break. They are doing so well, but if they go two weeks without reading it can really set them back quite a bit. Thanks for your help with this!

I hope you all have a fantastic break with your children! As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know! The best way to reach me is via e-mail. My e-mail address is jcochran@lpatucson.org. I will do my best to get back to you within 24 hours.

November 26, 2012

I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving! We only have 3 ½ weeks until Christmas break and it is going to fly by! Here are some announcements for the week.

The holiday shop is going to begin this week. It is not a fundraiser, rather a way to have your child shop for gifts for family members. If you would like your child to do this please send the money to school with them on Thursday. This is the day we have for the children in our class to go buy holiday shop items. Please send a note with the money and let us know who you want your child to be buying gifts for. Miss Elliott or I will be going with the kids to the holiday shop to make sure they are spending the money how you want them to. There is also information about this in the Link. It is of course entirely optional.

The weather is starting to turn cold so a lot of kids are bringing jackets to school. If your child wants to wear it inside the classroom it must be solid red, white or navy blue. They can wear any color jacket outside. Please put their name on all jackets! There are a lot of identical jackets so they are easily mixed up without names. It can also help to put our room number, 307, on the jacket so if it gets left outside it can be returned to the proper place. Please also remember that all clothes that are worn under the uniform and visible need to be red, white or navy blue as well.

Our holiday concert is on Tuesday, December 11th at 2pm in the cafeteria. This is different than the school wide holiday concert which first grade does not participate in. I hope to see you all there!

Don’t forget that the homework packet that was passed out the Friday before break is due this Friday. The spelling test on those words will be given this Friday as well!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know! The easiest way to reach me is by e-mail. My e-mail address is jcochran@lpatucson.org. I will respond within 24 hours.

November 19, 2012

There is no school on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of this week for Thanksgiving. I also wanted to let you know that our last day of school before Christmas is December 19th. It is a half day with no after school.

Thank you so much to everyone who sent in corn. You can still send it in tomorrow if you would like! The Thanksgiving feast is tomorrow. It is served free of charge to all students at the school so your child does not need to bring a lunch or lunch money for tomorrow.

Just a reminder that our first grade Christmas program is on Tuesday, December 11th at 2pm in the cafeteria. I hope to see you all there!

The weather is starting to turn cold so a lot of kids are bringing jackets to school. If your child wants to wear it inside the classroom it must be solid red, white or navy blue. The Display My Art materials will be coming home today. Your child completed a drawing at school and you can get it put on various items if you would like. Each child got a magnet with their design on it as well as an order form in case you would like to order anything. You can order online or return the form to school. The orders are due on November 26th so that we can get them back to you in time for the holidays.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know! The easiest way to reach me is via e-mail. My e-mail address is jcochran@lpatucson.org.

November 12, 2012

Here are a couple announcements for the week!

We are still looking for donations of canned corn. Please send them to school by next Tuesday for our Thanksgiving Feast. The Thanksgiving Feast is served free of charge to all students at our school, and will be served on Tuesday so your child does not need to bring lunch or lunch money on that day. We need enough corn to feed 750 people so please send in a couple cans if you are able!

We are getting to the time of the year when kids start wearing jackets to school. Your child can wear any color of jacket outside, but if they want to wear it in the classroom it must be solid red, white or navy blue. Please make sure you put your child's name somewhere on the jacket. It can also be helpful to put our room number, 307, on the jacket. This makes it easier for people to bring it back to the right place if it gets lost. As you can imagine, we have a lot of identical jackets around school so without a name it is pretty common for a kid to pick up the wrong jacket thinking it is theirs.

If you child wants to wear anything under their uniform, for example leggings or an undershirt with long sleeves, it must also be red, white or navy blue.

We will have our first grade Christmas program on December 11th at 2:00pm in the cafeteria. First grade has their Christmas program separate from the rest of the school so please make a note of the different date. We'd love to see you all there!

We have a penny war going on this week to benefit a school affected by Hurricane Sandy. If you have any extra change laying around please feel free to send it in! Thank you!

There will be no school next Wednesday, Thursday or Friday because of the Thanksgiving holiday. This means that homework will be sent home this Friday as usual, but it won’t be due back until the Friday after the break, November 30th. The spelling test for those words will be given on November 30th as well.

Here are the spelling words for this week:

We are preparing for our school wide Thanksgiving feast. Every class contributes something to the feast and first grade's food is corn. Please send in a can or two of corn to contribute to the feast. We need to have enough corn to feed close to 800 people so if you can contribute a couple cans it would be very much appreciated! Please send it in the can, we cannot serve premade food at school. We need the corn by Monday, November 19th. Thank you so much for your help!

·

Thank you to everyone who came in for a conference! It was so nice to meet with you all!

Book it is about to begin. Calendars will go home today. You can fill out the calendar and turn it in at the end of the month for a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. This is optional, and it does not replace the reading logs that come home in the homework packet.

·         Once again, it is getting colder out so many children are coming to school with jackets. In order for jackets to be worn in the classroom, they must be solid red, white or navy blue with no logos or writing. Any clothes that are worn under the jacket and visible need to follow the uniform and be red, white or navy blue, as well.

·         Book orders will be going home today. They can be paid by check or cash and checks should be made out to Scholastic Book Clubs. They are due back by October 26.

·         Harvest Festival is coming up. Tickets are on sale in the front office. We are also asking for candy donations for Harvest Fest. If you are able to donate please send it to school with your child before October 26th. There will be more information about Harvest Fest in the Link over the next few weeks.

·         We are having problems with students bringing toys to school. Please make sure children are not bringing them to school. They are a distraction and they are often lost, broken, or stolen which causes problems among the kids. Thank you for your help with this!

Here are the spelling words for the week:

1.      came
2.       stone
3.       dime
4.       mule

October 8th

I hope you all had a fantastic break with your children!

Here are a few announcements for the week:
  • There will be no homework or spelling this week. The next packet will be coming home this Friday and will be due the following Friday. Even though there is no reading log, please have your child read or read to your child every night! I cannot tell you enough how important and beneficial this is to your child.
  • Dollar dress down day is on Wednesday. If your child brings a dollar they may dress down. We have been having some issues with children dressing down, but not bringing a dollar. If this happens more than once your child will not be allowed to participate in future dress down days. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
  •  Conferences are this week. Thank you to everyone who has signed up! If you have not signed up please do so as soon as possible. I would like to meet with everyone. If none of the times on the door work for you, please come see me or send a note in your child's folder with some times that would work. If you have signed up for a conference I will send home a reminder in your child's folder today. If you have a conference scheduled for Monday the reminder was sent home with the report card. If you cannot come to your conference for any reason please send a note in your child's folder or call the office and ask them to put a note in my box.
  • It is getting colder so many children are bringing jackets to school. In order to be worn in the classroom the jackets need to be solid red, white or navy blue with no logos or writing. Any clothes that are worn under the uniform and visible need to follow the uniform and be red, white, or navy blue as well.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know! My e-mail address is jcochran@lpatucson.org.
